Leipzig-based photographer Margret Hoppe's exhibition Pair / Unpair is dedicated to the iconic Bauhaus buildings in Dessau. With double-exposure color photographs, Hoppe offers a new, yet reflective perspective on modernist architecture. Her artistic work is based on research into building plans, functional concepts, and the structural development of the ensembles since the 1920s. The famous photographs by Lucia Moholy also served as a reference.

In the twelve-part series Pair / Unpair, created during a residency at the Muche Masters' House in 2024, historical substance and contemporary perception meet. Through deliberate camera rotation and superimposition of images, Hoppe creates photographic image spaces that connect inside and outside, yesterday and today, in new ways.

"In the series Pair / Unpair, I attempt to show the various temporal and spatial layers of the architecture of the Dessau Bauhaus," says Hoppe. The resulting works differ from the classic architectural photographs of the 1920s and create a multi-layered visual language beyond documentary photography.
