DINGE . Bauhaus Zeitschrift Nr. 3
THINGS . Bauhaus magazine no. 3

The third edition of the Bauhaus magazine, published by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in May 2012. The magazine is dedicated to things. “A thing is determined by its nature”, wrote Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius in 1925. “To make it work properly - a vessel, a chair, a house - its essence must first be explored; for it has to serve its purpose perfectly, that is, to perform its function practically, to be durable, cheap and 'beautiful'”.
The magazine has set out to explore the essence of things. Although some of the selected objects may seem trivial at first glance, they can be used to examine utopia and emancipatory effects, fetishism and consumer behaviour - from a teaspoon to a cactus, from a price tag to a mirror, from a box to a timetable. Are things suited as vehicles for utopian ideas? How do copies determine today's design activity and what is Crowdsourced Design? The magazine attempts to find out how the Bauhaus has changed the way things are handled and how the encounter with the ''thing itself'' is shaped today.
