It must have been quite loud and dusty in the workshops at Bauhaus Dessau. Here was hammered, planed, sawn and woven. The publication CRAFT BECOMES MODERN. From the perspective of the craft the Bauhaus questions the manufacturing at the Bauhaus. No term was argued there more violently. The workshops were transit spaces: between factory and craft enterprise, between free experiment and industrial piece work. Out of this conflict, the Bauhaus tried to redefine craftsmanship as a utopia, but also in coexistence with industrial culture. How current these debates are today, contemporary design theorists and practitioners position themselves and provide new insights into the understanding of the craft in the 21st century. With texts by: Gerda Breuer, T'ai Smith, Eva Forgács, John Maciuika, Rafael Cardoso, Julia Bryan Wilson, Formafantasma, Sara Ouhaddou, Workshop, Dirk Vander Kooij, Álvaro Catalán de Ocón and others.
